As I sit in my recliner watching a pretty horrible football game, I'm grateful for the yummy snacks and rockin' decorations.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<strong><span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">Super Bowl Decorations</span></strong></div>
I make team pennants every year. I started off making the two teams that were playing in the Super Bowl but after the gazillionth time the Giants made it to the Bowl, I started just making other NFL teams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Ezlspatda3iQYUfQxVcTy1wX51pH4CXjLtAguP2ZpFm9VneroeOGC461K8dQWqjNzWneUiG3EqWvmsx9-I1_s-c-hdE4hpjm5sQoeevNrK6ATsaXl06Rf6JYaJ8t-utePKJ_o9IXUP4/s1600/super+bowl+decorations.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Ezlspatda3iQYUfQxVcTy1wX51pH4CXjLtAguP2ZpFm9VneroeOGC461K8dQWqjNzWneUiG3EqWvmsx9-I1_s-c-hdE4hpjm5sQoeevNrK6ATsaXl06Rf6JYaJ8t-utePKJ_o9IXUP4/s1600/super+bowl+decorations.png" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This year I made the Broncos, Browns, and Chiefs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn4ltLFc49F2RxY-MNYqqtHCQ9CQtvPHAQBTN8d_nfUOu8ghyphenhyphenGwTFsWOqjJChcYExm8IqHoeQiHFoBqvWYSbWDnM-iYu3_IO2QOWp_EMyPPDmJSGUlTu5-ucT1OOnNuLSXYYKIsymOmYU/s1600/football+penants+diy.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn4ltLFc49F2RxY-MNYqqtHCQ9CQtvPHAQBTN8d_nfUOu8ghyphenhyphenGwTFsWOqjJChcYExm8IqHoeQiHFoBqvWYSbWDnM-iYu3_IO2QOWp_EMyPPDmJSGUlTu5-ucT1OOnNuLSXYYKIsymOmYU/s1600/football+penants+diy.png" height="234" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also have the football field pennants. <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2011/02/football-field-banner.html" target="_blank">Tutorial here.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I also have my football <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2011/02/felt-football-coasters.html" target="_blank">felt coasters</a>. Maybe someday I'll inflate my vintage football. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Even the top of the piano gets some love. I adore the referee plates.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Well, this weekend I'm sharing a yummy recipe tutorial for Orange Margarita Squares on Cindy's blog,<a href="http://www.retrorevivalbiz.blogspot.com/2012/10/apron-giveaway_25.html" target="_blank"> Retro Revival</a>. It's a fun alternative to all the pumpkin desserts this Fall.<br />

Maybe you've seen how we decorate around here for the 4th of July <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2010/07/happy-independence-day-open-house.html" target="_blank">here</a> or <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2009/07/happy-4th-of-july.html" target="_blank">here</a>. It's a 40" x 30" collage made up of 50 stars made from items like seashells, dominos, and buttons on a blue sea of ribbon, cutlery, and paper, 13 stripes of torn patterned paper with silk flowers, beads, dice, Christmas ornaments, game pieces and more.<br />
<br />
My mum wrote a fun little I Spy game to go with our custom collage. You can enlarge the above picture or look at the smaller photos to see details and play along. <br />

<span style="text-align: start;">No one represents fun and youthfulness like Minnie Mouse. I spent the day with her and her friends at Disneyland and then had a Minnie Mouse birthday party at home.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made tissue puffs, <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tissue-paper-pom-poms-how-to" target="_blank"><strong>Martha Stewart style</strong></a> to hang over our food table. The red, white, and polka dot tissue paper are from Target. I sewed a couple easy table runners from black and white and red and white polka dot fabrics all from Joann. Then I made a matching bunting to hang beneath the puffs.</div>

<br />
The cake is wonderful alone but the strawberries fit with our color theme. I've also made a <strong><a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2010/12/buche-de-noel-yule-love-it.html" target="_blank">chocolate version.</a></strong><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We had water from a clear pitcher with ice and frozen cherries. I also had red and black licorice on the table. Yum! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found some cute red and white polka dot napkins at Target too. And, of course, now that my party is over I'm finding all kinds of Mickey and Minnie stuff. Sigh.</div>

The food theme is different every year (sometimes inspired by the teams that are playing or the venue) and we add to our decorations every year. Here's this years' rundown.<br />

About two weeks ago my friend Janet, the co-owner of <a href="http://www.sterlingpear.com/ref=sample_one"><strong>Sterling Pear</strong></a> asked for my help styling a photo shoot for her of some of the new products including a gold quilted tree skirt, stockings and table runner. She wanted gifts to go in the stockings and around the Christmas tree. Our friend Jeannette had picked out the most lovely gift wrap and gold silk ribbon and she needed my help wrapping the "gifts."<br />
<br />
The papers were beautiful colors, thick and textured with multiple silk-screened layers or flocking. I wrapped each gift and then tied each bow a different way. I even used the <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2007/10/easiest-bow-ever.html"><strong>Easiest Bow Ever Tutorial</strong></a> on the big present on the left. The ribbon only came in one width which would have overwelmed the smaller boxes so I cut in half lengthwise.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Every day the niece will choose a book to read. I'll let her choose if she wants to start with 1 (the calendar day) or 25 to count down to Christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYtuQBpvvQ1PPf1USUOkagFqAiogAAbQetinm347uMO59U1gnbzYaTBTKDsKVXC7oxUO4KW8tnou7nU5dKYuhfeuNo6636nUKPI9hnWUgEKU7coEk6OdAFcZv9trRr1wzviGRNwhL4TrM/s1600/IMG_0541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYtuQBpvvQ1PPf1USUOkagFqAiogAAbQetinm347uMO59U1gnbzYaTBTKDsKVXC7oxUO4KW8tnou7nU5dKYuhfeuNo6636nUKPI9hnWUgEKU7coEk6OdAFcZv9trRr1wzviGRNwhL4TrM/s320/IMG_0541.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Some are a little long so I put a shorter book the following day so the niece could finish the previous book. I tried to alternate the fun with the more faith-building so there is a good mix. The niece loves to read and open presents so I think she will enjoy this.<br />
<br />

Exciting news: I'm the new leader at the Vintage Sheet Blog! I've been a follower of the blog for a long time now so when I found out that Jen was moving on to pursue other things, I immediately raised my hand and sent her my ideas.<br />
<br />
It's been a busy but fun project. But, I love vintage sheets as seen on these projects posted here on this blog:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also have an Etsy store filled with vintage sheet fabrics pieces and pillowcases.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/GrowHome?ref=si_shop"><img border="0" src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/growhome-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It will be fun juggling two blogs but I have a plan. We Grow By Own Dreams will still have recipes, holiday decorating, papercrafting, and non-vintage sheet sewing projects as well as the occassional random post. The Vintage Sheet Blog will have my projects and tutorials made with vintage sheets as well as link parties and other vintages sheet fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, stay tuned because I still have a coule recipe tutorials as well as Harry Potter party details to post about here, on We Grow By Our Dreams. Thanks for stopping by today.</div>

This year, we had a Harry Potter party complete with a multi-course banquet, potion-making and Herbology classes, an egg hunt, pinata, and a game of Quidditch. There were so many details and I took so many pictures that I am going to do a quick overview as well as more detailed posts with the food, decor, and games.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Welcome to Hogworts.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Party attendees were students at Hogwarts. The Birthday Girl was named, "Student of the Month."</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">There were many potions on display. Some silly, some creepy but the students mostly enjoyed mixing their own potions.</span></div>

Sorry. Hey, but I have some good news. I'm in two publications this Summer. One crafty, one not-so-much.<br />
<br />
The first is <b><a href="http://207.58.189.122/jcmag/">Just Cards Magazine</a></b>. They published a baby card that I sent them in a bundle of ten cards over 2 years ago. This is the third card from that bundle that has been published. That reminds me I should send them more cards. :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDr9fdfKoJebV3Aiz3Bl10mu86BfZ3iYV-U64Yc6HBCWo-DRrN39Rl83YJSoNPri7JVX8jGEn-UNeW9NmnKcUuvLUnMlnDd9fp7jthDdtUA6W12RIGjV10TmCVss0jyrH91FfQTiN00VE/s1600/JCMAGsummer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDr9fdfKoJebV3Aiz3Bl10mu86BfZ3iYV-U64Yc6HBCWo-DRrN39Rl83YJSoNPri7JVX8jGEn-UNeW9NmnKcUuvLUnMlnDd9fp7jthDdtUA6W12RIGjV10TmCVss0jyrH91FfQTiN00VE/s1600/JCMAGsummer.jpg" /></a></div>Next, totally-nothing-to-do-with-crafting-but-still-cool, I wrote an article about remembering September 11th. It was published in our Police Officers Association publication, <b><a href="http://hbpoa.org/pdf_justice/2011/JFA_Vol22_Iss3.pdf">Justice for All</a></b>. I was honored that they wanted to print it, especially since they usually only print articles written by fellow officers.<b> <a href="http://hbpoa.org/pdf_justice/2011/JFA_Vol22_Iss3.pdf">It's on page 4</a></b> if you want to read it. And, look, they even printed a picture of me (the officer authors don't have that!)<br />

I'm in love with the yellow/white/gray color combo and the<a href="http://www.owhstarsandstamps.org/2011/04/dimensional-ruffle-card-tutorial-live.html"> <b>ruffle technique</b></a> that I learned from Sandy, our fearless OWH leader. So, I made this card for someone serving in our armed forces to send home to a loved one. <br />

And, like most people we anxiously awaited the nuptials of Kate Middleton and Prince William. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4tjyYvY-3T4IbWzDUbZZiZc8hJG8emB_rKSWQFxhTmpWQ6JKoHkf7CjK-uwk5OMRcXNb9v-YeGWnNRQfAJTirDt1DgLsufNv2l3vAX_HBrFkTa4XKm5w308gIeQdv4FdoFSb47uARwW0/s1600/rotal+wedding+couple.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4tjyYvY-3T4IbWzDUbZZiZc8hJG8emB_rKSWQFxhTmpWQ6JKoHkf7CjK-uwk5OMRcXNb9v-YeGWnNRQfAJTirDt1DgLsufNv2l3vAX_HBrFkTa4XKm5w308gIeQdv4FdoFSb47uARwW0/s640/rotal+wedding+couple.jpg" width="456" /></a></div>
We wanted to celebrate with the British people. We live in California so that meant watching the wedding live at 3 a.m. We didn't dress up. Hey, I was lucky to get the fam up that early. But, when food is involved, the family can't resist.<br />
<br />
Of course we had our herbal tea. Our favorite is chocolate coconut (very non-British but yummy.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-edaHHw2f_P_pONNyeW2tQ-SYI67qACdjg5j3DnfF3kIJ7qGheQHS9-Z-WhoIcLTCX6tMa6qZEv3ZhrgtxAXVp2QkwZ8E2aj-35DHShd_M1SyhS_iS53oI4AjM1k1mGCzoRAnnyXo9xA/s1600/wtsign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-edaHHw2f_P_pONNyeW2tQ-SYI67qACdjg5j3DnfF3kIJ7qGheQHS9-Z-WhoIcLTCX6tMa6qZEv3ZhrgtxAXVp2QkwZ8E2aj-35DHShd_M1SyhS_iS53oI4AjM1k1mGCzoRAnnyXo9xA/s640/wtsign.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div>
Actually, we started our party early by having Fish n' Chips for dinner. Then, woke up to the rest of the goodies. For some reason, we had no problem having another huge meal at 3 a.m.<br />

We bought the scones and some of our other treats at Bristol Farms. In fact, they were ready for us with a whole section dedicated to the Royal wedding. We enjoyed the scones with clotted cream and marmalade. <br />

I made some cucumber and egg salad sandwiches. The cucumber are then niece's favorite.<br />

Welsh cheese with crackers. Not only are we Welsh but this was our little tribute to William's mother, Princess Dianna.<br />

For dessert number 3 we had a small grooms cake. This was another Bristol Farms purchase. It was a chocolate cake with crushed cookies and dried fruit with a ganache frosting and dusted with gold.<br />

Thank you for stopping by my blog today. Sorry I didn't get these pics up a couple weeks ago. And, sorry the picture quality is poor. We don't have a lot of natural light at 3 a.m. :) I'll have another post this weekend. For sure. <br />

So, this week when I received the invitation to a Derby Party, I knew that I had to wear a cool hat. I really don't know where I would go to buy a hat so I chose to make one myself. I went with the "fascinator"style which, as described by wikipedia is, "a delicate, slightly-to-very frivolous head decoration worn almost exclusively by women."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatotherside-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatotherside-1.jpg" width="283" /></a></div> How I made my hat:<br />
<ol><li>Covered a headband with pink grograin ribbon.</li>
<li>Rolled orange meshy fabric (it's stiffer than tulle and the holes are larger.)</li>
<li>Sewed the orange fabric together</li>
<li>Sewed the pink flower to the orange fabric</li>
<li>Attached big green leaf to headband with florist tape</li>
<li>Attached the orange fabric to headband with hot glue (and sewed a little just to be safe)</li>
</ol>That's it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatfront-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatfront-1.jpg" width="368" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatside-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e147/hbpuppy/hatside-1.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>It was fun seeing the other hats at the party. I might be a little obsessed with hats now. Or, shall I say, fascinators?<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by the blog today. I'm still working on the pictures of our Royal Wedding Feast. 3 o'clock in the morning isn't the best time to take photos. LOL.<br />

When I heard that my dear friend Danielle was dreaming of having a tea party similar to one she attended with loved ones a year ago when she lived on the East Coast, I knew that I wanted to recreate a version of that for her. And, because Danielle is bravely fighting stage 4 breast cancer, we also used the party as a means to raise awareness and money for her treatments.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Danielle and me</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The theme I chose is Cherry Tea. I love the way it sounds like charity which is defined as the pure love of Christ. Danielle is full of that love. I took a little creative license and changed up the scripture 1 Corinthians 8:1 which says in part, "charity edifieth" to "Cherry Tea edifieth." This was on our invites, little picks, and thank you notes. Danielle's friend Kathy designed them beautifully. On the back of each pick (shown standing in a See's chocolate) is an uplifting quote or a breast cancer fact.<br />

I did it, again. This is the fourth time I've donated hair to the wonderful organization, Locks of Love. Two years ago I wrote <a href="http://wegrowbyourdreams.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-donate-to-locks-of-love.html">a tutorial on donating hair</a> to Locks of Love. Really, it's totally easy. <br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Grow your hair out</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Put it in a ponytail</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Cut off the Ponytail</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">Fill out <a href="http://locksoflove.org/donate.html">the form</a> and mail it in with the ponytail</span></li>
</ol>
Here is a picture of my hair just before I got it cut off. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love the organization <a href="http://locksoflove.org/index.html">Locks of Love</a>. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to help in my little way.It's funny, I get a lot of the same comments from people. I will address two of them:<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">"Your hair must grow really fast!" </span>Actually, my hair grows the average 1/2 inch per month. I usually donate 10-12 inches every 24 months so that's how the math works out.</li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;">"I could never do that!"</span> The first time I donated it was a little hard for me. But, now I always think of my hair in terms of how much longer it needs to get before I can donate it to a child in need. Change your perspective and you can do a lot of impossible things.</li>
</ul>
I've copied the organizations mission statement below. I think it is beautiful and inspiring. For even more inspiration, go to the <a href="http://locksoflove.org/donate.html">recipient web page</a> to see children with their hair prosthetics. <br />

"Our mission is to <b>return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children.</b> The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need."<br />
<br />
Thank you for visiting We Grow By Our Dreams today. I hope that you will consider donating a ponytail to <a href="http://locksoflove.org/index.html">Locks of Love</a>.<br />

In fact, I can see the Long Beach coastline from the beach where I run. But, I don't really go and do all the fun touristy things there very often. A few weeks ago the niece and I had a super fun half-day in Long Beach so I thought I'd share some pics with you.<br />
<br />
I have to tell you about the red Passport Bus. It takes you (for free) to pretty much all the touristy things in LB like the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Queen Mary, Ocean Boulevard, etc. The niece had never been in a non-school bus so this was a big deal for her.<br />

When I was a kid, we used to take school field trips to visit the old ship. Built in 1936 as a luxury cruise liner, it took its last voyage in 1967 and was re-purposed as a hotel with all its 1930's era charm. I've also attended conferences on board. The views from the deck are spectacular.<br />

I hope that you had a blessed Easter. Later this week I'll show some pics from the Cherry Tea Party that I co-hosted and a fun half-day trip the niece and I did a few weeks ago. I have a few photos from around the house to share with you and some stories to go with them. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
We'll start with two of my new finds. I found these vintage fabric-covered plastic eggs at an estate sale a few weeks ago. Each egg has a different fabric and there are 3 different sizes. I found the wire bunny egg holder at the Assistance League Thrift Shop this year. I love the combo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_gd0-eUtRyfWO9SHbS61ggBTPBLIRMf2waO8I8L1UpDSCu5fiEH3AVyaZ9i7DL-ZWVebzu-nSX45p5vUFJnv5vicYgAqR2PzZAu9SRIXb9U6ceWGEvEo_BmmSYXzo2gYrC6zie9B-fdU/s1600/easter10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_gd0-eUtRyfWO9SHbS61ggBTPBLIRMf2waO8I8L1UpDSCu5fiEH3AVyaZ9i7DL-ZWVebzu-nSX45p5vUFJnv5vicYgAqR2PzZAu9SRIXb9U6ceWGEvEo_BmmSYXzo2gYrC6zie9B-fdU/s400/easter10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here we have two versions of a similar chocolate bunny. The first guy is faux chocolate. The second can be filled with any kind of candy. We used sparkly jelly beans.<br />

This is the egg garland that I made last year with fabric scraps and vintage pillowcases. Our Easter count down bunny is in the middle. He counts down the days with numbers on carrots.<br />

We are very lazy gardeners at my house. My neighbors asked if we had garden faeries that come in the night because they never see us gardening and we always have gorgeous flowers. Ha ha ha.<br />
<br />
Up next, my sister and I found this spring plate at a different estate sale. Actually, it was buried in the garage of all places. I love the texture of the flowers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOn_fKS_-oWqXLsOH87RSdsQY-4WKkuj-GabbD5OjbC4YuahoTHedK49mADUbH94Cvwcix6yfIoHd9c4ixom0LORDHk8X5sLR2hSi3D26Vo714USRgp-pAVYooeJf-O5nn9aISvXpFXh8/s1600/easter11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOn_fKS_-oWqXLsOH87RSdsQY-4WKkuj-GabbD5OjbC4YuahoTHedK49mADUbH94Cvwcix6yfIoHd9c4ixom0LORDHk8X5sLR2hSi3D26Vo714USRgp-pAVYooeJf-O5nn9aISvXpFXh8/s320/easter11.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
We love to decorate the coffee table. At the same estate sale as the plate (also in the garage), we found the purple pitcher. It is filled with plastic eggs. The little basket holds the eggs we hide for my niece every year in our front yard.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is another thrift store find. This bunny sits on the divider between the kitchen and dining room. I love strawberries for Easter.<br />

One of my favorite Easter memories as a child was going to my cousins' house for spring break. We would always make lemon cupcakes with green coconut and jellybeans with pipe cleaner handles to resemble Easter baskets. The niece and I re-created them this year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We aren't Greek but wish we had Greek relatives to teach us how to cook Greek food. A few years back I bought this beautiful cookbook. It is filled with gorgeous pictures of not only the food but of the people and landscape of Greece. We will be having a Greek-style feast for Easter this year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And, lastly for our tour, our Crown of Thorns plant. This was given to my niece at church this year to remind her of the true meaning of Easter. She was told that this is what the Roman Soldiers used to make the crown of thorns for Jesus to wear during his crucifixion.<br />

Thank you so much for visiting We Grow By Our Dreams for an Easter Open House. I hope that you have a wonderful Easter. I will be conducting a choir of young women ages 12-18 for one song tomorrow at church.Heather Growhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07923069822435459178noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3094493570471109375.post-73527267538597982712011-04-09T20:27:00.000-07:002011-04-10T09:09:58.570-07:00The Drive HomeI'm pretty blessed. I commute to and from work along a beautiful stretch of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Huntington Beach, California. At the beginning of my commute is the more urban, downtown HB scene. Then, I get a beautiful, unobstructed view of the ocean. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to drive home at sunset. I have a little habit of taking pictures with my camera phone if I stop at a light. Here are some pics:<br />
<br />
I actually took this one on my way to work. I'm sitting at the light at Main Street. Main Street has lots of fun shops and restaurants. It is closed a couple evenings a week for a street festival. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjCC_siwDyw6LoNuIj00aWPuv5sVVOleJ9L11DU3BgKce5ygo5_B600wQUZfz0febumXkvqq8vSD8O1QIw7DqXtzqWxEtLAnUDz1gR0GMp7YLqj6UOlCR6dnWPOyNoKCmKvZlk9k7bcI/s1600/100524_135211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjCC_siwDyw6LoNuIj00aWPuv5sVVOleJ9L11DU3BgKce5ygo5_B600wQUZfz0febumXkvqq8vSD8O1QIw7DqXtzqWxEtLAnUDz1gR0GMp7YLqj6UOlCR6dnWPOyNoKCmKvZlk9k7bcI/s400/100524_135211.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>This is Duke's. It's a yummy restaurant at the base of the HB Pier. It sits right on the ocean side of PCH so the views are incredible. <br />

In the picture below you can see several people walking along our bike path. You can see Catalina Island on the left side of the picture and Palo Verdes Peninsula on the right. This is the view of The Cliffs or Dog Beach. It's mostly a local beach for surfers and dog lovers because it is one of the few beaches where dogs are allowed in Southern California.<br />

My favorite is when the brown pelicans soar above my car as I'm driving home at sunset. On the non-ocean side there are beautiful wetlands full of interesting birds. It's pretty cool.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV8X1wRHEcn7TscoT_ojU0iqcPnOdIYFuczZfcf-ygEWcsyPd89rZD3_hav1XPV4z87bLHp1Mei1PEQ2TnmhyphenhyphengPcdmLzcwbKR7mcpCyOpw6x7QRJk7IcqNbtnP8aSajNLLaHty-2-Earg/s1600/me+at+DI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV8X1wRHEcn7TscoT_ojU0iqcPnOdIYFuczZfcf-ygEWcsyPd89rZD3_hav1XPV4z87bLHp1Mei1PEQ2TnmhyphenhyphengPcdmLzcwbKR7mcpCyOpw6x7QRJk7IcqNbtnP8aSajNLLaHty-2-Earg/s320/me+at+DI.jpg" width="203" /></a></div></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">As a teenager I had the opportunity to volunteer at two different thrift stores: Deseret Industries and the Fred Jordan Mission. Today, I volunteer bi-monthly at the Assistance League Thrift Store. It is a lot of fun and very rewarding knowing that all the money that comes in goes to help my community.<br />
<br />
So, clean out your cupboards, closets, and garage and pass some items on to new homes. Here are some tips:</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Choosing a Charitable Thrift Store</span></div><ul style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWUhIDAiNNo2ElRxKKpZPA16TW9gtWmIDUHGBEaF2tRzfzOK_rbCX6IKVv973Aynd8ip1y0A10svfOPRJXa13sbenFTGKhe4hBfUvbKPpWBvi1QIHN7NtLYEe721tV8DrPAByM60fYeEQ/s1600/logofinalresults.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="118" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWUhIDAiNNo2ElRxKKpZPA16TW9gtWmIDUHGBEaF2tRzfzOK_rbCX6IKVv973Aynd8ip1y0A10svfOPRJXa13sbenFTGKhe4hBfUvbKPpWBvi1QIHN7NtLYEe721tV8DrPAByM60fYeEQ/s200/logofinalresults.gif" width="200" /></a>
<li>Choose a store in your community. Most likely the money earned will help people in your local area.</li>
<li>Donate where you shop. It is so easy to drop off a bag, box or two when you do your shopping.</li>
<li>Choose a charity that is close to your heart. </li>
<li>or, pick one that will pick up items from your home or work.</li>
<li>Check out <b><a href="http://www.thethriftshopper.com/">Thriftshopper.com </a></b>for charitable thrift stores in your area.</li>
</ul><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">What to donate</span><br />
Each store has different needs/wants. Check with the store for specifics but below are some pretty standard donations.<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: large;"></span>clean clothing</li>
<li>shoes (my tip: tie shoelaces together so they don't get separated) </li>
<li>books</li>
<li>knick knacks</li>
<li>toys</li>
<li>linens</li>
<li>kitchenware</li>
<li>CDs, DVDs (Originals only. Not burned or copies. )</li>
<li>jewelry, belts, and handbags</li>
</ul><span style="font-size: large;">What NOT to donate</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-size: small;">Again, check the specific needs of your thrift store. Below are some pretty standard items that are not accepted by most stores, many times because of federal laws.</span></span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">mattresses</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">paint and other chemicals</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">tires</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">torn upholstered furniture</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">broken electronics</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">medications</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">newspapers</span></span></li>
</ul></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DJGVIij_7sy88N30bBAvL2Kf13XX8BnV0A9tGrdN3VRPgMZxgF0j0J6FayG1qFCZhitrQumwCASaZE1kV6_Aa_SRG-BWWHEDjE6aHPoj6ros3UXeWA53vwoPri8qCQ4XQkfwV2ywDrs/s1600/IMG_5552.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DJGVIij_7sy88N30bBAvL2Kf13XX8BnV0A9tGrdN3VRPgMZxgF0j0J6FayG1qFCZhitrQumwCASaZE1kV6_Aa_SRG-BWWHEDjE6aHPoj6ros3UXeWA53vwoPri8qCQ4XQkfwV2ywDrs/s200/IMG_5552.JPG" width="200" /></a><span style="font-size: large;">Some great charities that have thrift stores</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Many wonderful charitable organizations raise funds through a thrift store.</span> <span style="font-size: small;">However, it is important to note that not all thrift stores are run by charities. The Charities Review Council has a <b><a href="http://www.smartgivers.org/not_every_thrift_store_is_a_nonprofit2.html">good article</a> </b>about the distinction and also has information on charities.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Below are some of my favorites. </span></span><br />
<ul><li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><a href="http://www.assistanceleague.org/chapterssearch.cfm">Assistance League</a> </b>-This one is dear to my heart. </span></span></li>
<li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://goodwill.org/">Goodwill </a></span></span></b></li>
<li><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.salvationarmy.com/usn/www_usn_2.nsf">Salvation Army </a></span></span></b></li>
<li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b><a href="http://www.providentliving.org/content/display/0,11666,8064-1-4425-1,00.html">Deseret Industries</a> </b>- This is a great one if you have large furniture to donate. Sometimes you can schedule a time for them to pick it up from your home. </span></span></li>
</ul><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Don't forget to ask for a receipt. Your donation could be tax-deductible. </span></span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></span></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: small;">Do you have a favorite thrift store that I didn't list? Any tips for donating/shopping at thrift stores? Favorite thrift store purchase? I am all about the thrift stores lately. :) Thanks for visiting.</span></span></div>Heather Growhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07923069822435459178noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3094493570471109375.post-58101363759303773062011-03-22T09:53:00.000-07:002011-03-22T09:54:09.990-07:00Some Happy Stuff<div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">WGBOD has been a little MIA lately. I've been busy writing/directing/enjoying Roadshows. If you are unfamiliar with Roadshow, it's a 15 minute long musical skit that features teenagers. It is performed in at least one church building in an evening. In our case, it was two and we had 30 minutes to get off stage, pack up kids, props, musical instruments and scenery and get to another church building. We made it!</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">This post is a catch-up of some cards I've been making but haven't posted. They all use color combos that are different for me and some Martha Stewart eyelet paper trims.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">The first is navy, yellow and white. I made all three cards for <b><a href="http://operationwritehome.org/">Operation Write Home</a>. </b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTDWPeZn865yjQUWyUGbD8OTcZdPQq8iuxBL8fp2dbeq5r9P2C1BwEoYnkhrXMh5pEnIiBPUO7WUXSHwIcISi8j9Gds0bDt5gIBQRErR8AQhYCAqCebpE_ly5ZLk7znJzOVJbkih9Cdlg/s1600/blue+and+yellow+thinking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTDWPeZn865yjQUWyUGbD8OTcZdPQq8iuxBL8fp2dbeq5r9P2C1BwEoYnkhrXMh5pEnIiBPUO7WUXSHwIcISi8j9Gds0bDt5gIBQRErR8AQhYCAqCebpE_ly5ZLk7znJzOVJbkih9Cdlg/s400/blue+and+yellow+thinking.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> The next card was in response to the OWH challenge to create a card using mostly white with a pop of color.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI6KvN0PMFg-MD9dN_B4rsB7WHu6odHu3v9hRyNaeATB7GarnF45Xl_RzbVtNx7XCSRUHFNZn-AtdSwfr235-aFk6ajpY9pG3WFASGITy9Bcc_Z9UsEFzyhnJ7XFLT1aDtf9QHQCHNYM/s1600/yellow+and+white+love.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI6KvN0PMFg-MD9dN_B4rsB7WHu6odHu3v9hRyNaeATB7GarnF45Xl_RzbVtNx7XCSRUHFNZn-AtdSwfr235-aFk6ajpY9pG3WFASGITy9Bcc_Z9UsEFzyhnJ7XFLT1aDtf9QHQCHNYM/s400/yellow+and+white+love.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;">And, finally, this card features an unusual color scheme for me. It is navy with green, red and white. The Love is a rub-on. My verdict on rub-ons: Stamps are totally easier and budget-friendly but if you want a clean, crisp white on dark cardstock, rub-ons are a solution. White embossing powder would also do the trick. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Verdana,sans-serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZmFbPxOusRqlD-cwRELS0lAG98dswxW7WKrdq8j9V4gXiUnPYNlr5m4RLHIW8xRP0NWdYhz65otsYxyrSPSbKpk6_by7n3zMZqyZ8yqwKBXwkaYQkussWe5K_Qm7VDxgESb0uPJ1_11k/s1600/blue+green+red+love.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZmFbPxOusRqlD-cwRELS0lAG98dswxW7WKrdq8j9V4gXiUnPYNlr5m4RLHIW8xRP0NWdYhz65otsYxyrSPSbKpk6_by7n3zMZqyZ8yqwKBXwkaYQkussWe5K_Qm7VDxgESb0uPJ1_11k/s400/blue+green+red+love.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> As always, thank you for stopping by WGBOD today.
